I've had a few conversations with folks who want to share their ideas on how our new additive manufacturing business can achieve success in the marketplace. One of those suggestions, that's also been repeated frequently by people advising Shopify owners how to increase sales, is to show a discounted price. The theory is, people are more inclined to buy if they perceive that they're getting a "deal."
Even though that's probably true, that's not something I'm inclined to do. I was raised in an era where there was a saying about unscrupulous sales tactics - used car dealers in particular.
"Mark 'em up, mark 'em down, move 'em out." The reality being that they would initially overprice the product and then offer an immediate "discount" so the customer thought they were getting a better deal.
I'm not going to do that. Our products are priced based on cost to manufacture and what the market will bear as a profit margin. There is also the intangible component of the creativity and design hours that went into each product. So, if you see us reduce a price, it's a legitimate change responding to market conditions, not a trick to make you think you got a deal.
